Spartans Fall on Last-Minute Goal Against Michigan

East Lansing, Mich. -- A tipped shot by Garret Schifsky with just under a minute remaining propelled No. 13 Michigan to a 2-1 victory at Munn Ice Arena on Friday night. The Spartans suffered their first home loss since October, and fall to 21-5-3, 12-4-3 in conference play. .
Schifsky, to Trey Augustine's right, was able to tip Ethan Edwards' shot from the left point, getting the go-ahead goal at 19:03.3. It was Edwards and Michael Hage's second assists of the night and gave the Wolverines the second Friday night win in this series. Schifsky also scored the overtime game winner in Ann Arbor on Jan. 17. Michigan improves to 16-11-2, 10-8-1 B1G.
Cameron Corpi made 38 saves in the game, including 20 in the second period. Augustine made 25 saves for the Spartans.
The teams combined for 43 penalty minutes, including a major called against the Spartans in the opening period. The Spartans were 1-for-3 on the power play, and 4-for-5 on the kill. The Spartans held Michigan to just three shots on goal in its five power plays, which included a five-minute major kill for MSU in the opening frame.

PERIOD RECAPS
First Period: MSU struck first on a power play opportunity. After taking the first penalty of the game, the Wolverines erased their own man advantage with an interference call. MSU got into the offensive zone and Basgall settled the puck in the high slot, and pushed it over to Isaac Howard in the right circle. Howard saw the defensemen heavily defending his shooting lanes and went across the slot to Karsen Dorwart in the left circle, and his shot beat Corpi for the first goal of the game (and Dorwart's ninth of the season). The visitors tied it up at 11:09, skating on a 5x3. Daniel Russell was whistled for a major for head contact at the same time that Vladislav Lukashevich took a interference call, and TJ Hughes took a pass from Ethan Edwards to make it a 1-1 game. The period ended in the 1-1 deadlock, with the teams having an equal number of shots on goal, (10) despite the Wolverines having a total of nine minutes on the power play (and getting just two shots on Augustine in those nine minutes).
Second Period: MSU opened up with a 13-4 edge in shots on goal by the time the squads got to the time out, with the Spartans setting up shop in their offensive zone for extended stretches – but not finding the back of the net. By the final buzzer, the Spartans had a 20-7 edge in shots and 12-8 lead in faceoffs – but it was still a 1-1 game on the scoreboard.
Third Period: The teams skated through 19 scoreless minutes, with the Wolverines getting a little more offensive flow and holding a 9-7 edge in shots on goal. With the Wolverines in their own offensive end, Edwards unleashed a shot from the left point – it caromed off of Schifsky, changing direction and beating Augustine over his blocker hand at the left post at 19:03.3. The goalie headed to the bench for the final 41 seconds in favor of an extra skater, but Corpi stopped attempts by both Joey Larson and Dorwart in the fading seconds to secure the Michigan victory.
