THE ORIGINAL SIX
The top notes you need to know about Spartan hockey
•  Top-seeded Michigan State hosts No. 7 seed Notre Dame in the semifinal round of the Big Ten Tournament.  The Irish advanced after a quarterfinal-round victory on the road over No. 2 seed Minnesota; the Irish won games one and three (3-2, 4-1), and the Gophers winning the Saturday matchup, 4-2.  Notre Dame is 12-24-1 overall on the season and finished 4-19-1 in the Big Ten regular season.  Â
 •  The Spartans captured a second consecutive Big Ten title in 2024-25 and are looking to repeat as Big Ten Tournament champions as well.  MSU is making its third consecutive Big Ten semifinal appearance, and the fourth since the start of the league in 2013-14.  The Spar-tans won the regular season and tournament titles in 2024, just the third time in Conference history that the same team won both (2014-15, Minnesota and 2017-18, Notre Dame).  The Spartans concluded the regular season at 24-6-4, 15-5-4 in B1G play.  Â
 • MSU's has four finalists for the five major Big Ten post-season awards:  Isaac Howard (Player of the Year), Trey Augustine (Goaltender of the Year), Matt Basgall (Defenseman of the Year), and Adam Nightingale (Coach of the Year).  Â
•  Howard is a Hobey Baker candidate and B1G Player of the Year finalist, delivering 23 goals and 46 points in MSU's 34 games.  He is second in the country in goals, sixth in points (46) and fifth in points per game (1.35).  The junior finished the B1G season as the scoring champion with 33 points, 17 assists, and 1.38 points per game in Conference contests.  Basgall is a finalist for Big Ten Defenseman of the Year honors.  The junior is tied for third on the team in points and is second to Howard on the team with 19 assists. Basgall is also tied for third among B1G defensemen in goals (6) and points (25), and is fourth in assists (18); his 0.74 points per game ranks second among conference blueliners. Â
•  Augustine is not only a B1G Goaltender of the Year candidate, but also a semifinalist for two prestigious national awards:  The Mike Richter Award as the nation's top goaltender in Division I, and the AAU Sullivan Award as the nation's top amateur athlete.  He leads the league in wins (17, 10th NCAA), save percentage (.925, 13th NCAA) and goals against average (2.09, 16th NCAA), and is third in games played (27), minutes played (1635:30), and fourth in saves (705).  He owns the second-fewest losses (6) of any full-time starting goalie in the country, and only one of those is to a team outside of the top 15 of the current PairWise rankings.
•  The line of Tommi Männistö - Tiernan Shoudy-Tanner Kelly has played the last 21 games together and produced five goals and nine points over the final two Big Ten weekends.  Shoudy had a pair of goals in the regular-season finale at Notre Dame, his first career two-goal effort.  His eight goals and 17 points this season are both career highs.  Männistö has a career best in both goals (3) and points (11) as well.  After his Friday game-winner at Notre Dame, Kelly owns a 7-9-16 (+11) line and is two points from matching the 18 points he had in both his sophomore and junior campaigns.
