OXFORD, Ohio – Action at the Miami RedHawks softball tournament got underway for Michigan State softball on Friday afternoon, dropping an 8-0 contest to the RedHawks in game one of the weekend at Miami Softball Stadium.
MSU moves to 4-9 this season while Miami improves to 6-13. The Spartans return to action on Saturday, March 8, looking to bounce back with an 11 a.m. game against Northern Kentucky before a 4 p.m. rematch against Miami.
Freshman starting pitcher Jacey Schuler (4-3) went 4.0 innings in the circle, striking out six with no walks. Schuler allowed five hits and five runs (three earned) before she was relieved by senior Madison Taylor with one runner on in the fifth. Taylor allowed a pair of earned runs when sophomore Ava Mullen entered to tally the final two defensive outs of the game for MSU. Mullen struck out one and allowed one unearned run.
Sophomore outfielder Kendall Smiley and junior first baseman Kaelin Cash tallied base hits for the Spartans. Freshman Natalia Kenyatta and junior Hailey Bila drew walks, while junior Hannah Hawley reached on a hit by pitch.
In a pitcher's duel through two innings, both sides stranded runners in the first before going down in order in the second. Schuler struck out the final batter of the first inning, then rattled off three more consecutive punch outs to send the RedHawks down in order in the second.
Miami's offense broke through in the third however scoring four runs on three hits and two errors.
Things did not go MSU's way offensively in the fourth after Cash reached on a lead-off single. Junior Sydney Doloszycki nearly sent a ball out of the park, just missing the distance, and a rocket liner off the bat of senior Mik Anthony was caught in the air and turned for a double play at first to end the threat.
The RedHawks ended the game in five, scoring four runs on three hits and two errors in the final frame.
