Softball Sweeps Day Two at Miami Tournament

OXFORD, Ohio – Michigan State softball went 2-0 on day two of the Miami RedHawks softball tournament on Saturday, bouncing back to secure wins over Northern Kentucky (6-0) and Miami (9-7).
Saturday's victories improve MSU's record to 6-9 entering the final game of the weekend against Northern Kentucky at 12 p.m. on Sunday, March 9.
Game One – Michigan State 6, Northern Kentucky 0
Freshman Jacey Schuler (5-3) bounced back for MSU in game one, earning her fifth win of the season in the circle with six shutout innings, allowing just five hits and striking out five. Freshman Carsyn Cassady came on in relief tossing a scoreless seventh frame with one strikeout.
Michigan State scattered 10 hits with seven players tallying base knocks. Junior Sydney Doloszycki, junior Hannah Hawley and junior Kaelin Cash all finished with two-hit performances. Doloszycki notched a career-high four RBI on a single and a two-run homer. Hawley posted a pair of doubles and junior Britain Beshears tripled. Sophomore Hannah Greer and senior Macy Lee also drove in runners for the Spartans.
Lee got the scoring started for MSU in the second inning, singling through the right side to score pinch-running freshman Hannah Herman. Doloszycki came through with two outs, extending the Spartan advantage to 3-0 on a single that brought home freshman Ava Coffinger and junior Hailey Bila.
Greer provided an insurance run for Michigan State in the fifth, singling up the middle to score Beshears from third who tripled earlier in the inning.
Doloszycki left no doubt in the sixth, blasting her third home run of the season to left center to bring home senior Collette Allen who reached on a pinch-hit single.
Schuler held NKU scoreless in her six innings of work, three times stranding a pair of Norse runners on base to get out of jams. Northern Kentucky doubled to lead-off the sixth inning, and a two-out single put runners on the corners for NKU, but Schuler got out of the frame on a fly out to left. Schuler earned inning-ending strikeouts in the first and fifth innings.
Game Two – Michigan State 9, Miami 7
Michigan State snapped Miami's 25-game home winning streak in game two, bouncing back from an 8-0 loss to the RedHawks on Friday afternoon.
Senior Faith Guidry (1-3) struck out six batters over four innings to earn her first victory of the season in the circle. Guidry was relieved in the sixth by freshman Jacey Schuler, who got out of a bases loaded jam and struck out four over two innings to earn her first career save.
Multiple Spartans turned in career-efforts in game two, with senior Macy Lee going 4-for-4 at the plate to set a new career-high in hits along with a career-best tying three RBI. Sophomore Hannah Greer had two hits for the Spartans and her three RBI were a career best. Also with a multi-hit performance was sophomore Kendall Smiley who was 2-for-5 with a triple and an RBI. Juniors Kaelin Cash and Britain Beshears drew two walks each.
MSU found themselves trailing 2-0 early but tied the game in the third inning after a bases loaded sac fly by Greer and an RBI single from Lee. The RedHawks wasted no time taking the lead back however scoring a pair of runs in the third and one in the fourth on a solo home run to lead 5-2.
A massive seven-run fifth inning swung the momentum in Michigan State's favor for good with seven Spartans reaching base before the first out was recorded. Back-to-back RBI doubles by Greer and Lee provided MSU with a 6-5 advantage. Freshmen Natalia Kenyatta and Hannah Herman later scored on wild pitches to give the Spartans an 8-5 edge. Smiley capped off the scoring onslaught with an RBI triple to right center field scoring freshman Ava Coffinger.
