Jaxon Kohler Picks Up All-Big Ten Honorable Mention Recognition
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Michigan State men's basketball redshirt sophomore guard Jeremy Fears Jr. was named All-Big Ten Conference First Team and senior forward Jaxon Kohler earned All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors by the league's coaches, announced today by the conference office.
Fears earned All-Big Ten Conference First Team honors from both the league's coaches and the media, while Kohler was tabbed an honorable mention selection by both groups.
Senior center Carson Cooper was the team's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award honoree.
Fears is the first Michigan State player to be selected All-Big Ten Conference First Team since Cassius Winston in 2020.
One of the team's captains, Fears leads Michigan State in scoring with 15.3 points per game, No. 16 in the Big Ten Conference, and in assists, with 9.1 per game, which not only ranks first in the Big Ten but is No. 1 in the country. He ranks fifth in the Big Ten in free throw percentage (89.0%) and second in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.13).
In Big Ten-only games, Fears finished 11th in the league in scoring with 17.6 ppg, while leading the league with 8.8 apg in 20 games. His 8.8 average during in-conference ties the league record set by Purdue's Braden Smith last year.
Nationally, Fears leads the country in assists per game (9.1), total assists (281), is fourth in assist-to-turnover ratio (4.13) and ranks No. 29 in free throw percentage (89.0%).
His current total of 281 assists is the second-best single-season mark in Michigan State history and he needs just 11 more to pass Cassius Winston's school record of 291, set in 2018-19.
Kohler, meanwhile, has been among the leaders in the Big Ten and nationally in rebounding. He is second on the team in scoring (12.8 ppg) and leads MSU with 9.1 rebounds per game, which is second in the conference and No. 29 in the country. Kohler is No. 27 in the country in total rebounds, ranks 42nd in defensive rebounds per game (6.0), 46th in offensive rebounds per game (3.1) and 25th nationally in double-doubles with 12 this season.
One of the team's four captains, Kohler has scored in double figures 22 times, led the team in scoring seven times and has two games with at least 20 points, including tying his career-high with 23 points in the regular season finale at Michigan. In addition, he has 13 games with at least 10 rebounds and became the first player under MSU Head Coach Tom Izzo to record five-straight double-doubles. He is one of only two Division I players averaging at least 12.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg while shooting at least 50.0 percent from the floor and 39.0 percent from 3-point land.
Michigan State's men's basketball team earned the No. 3 seed in this week's Big Ten Tournament and will begin play on Friday, March 13 at United Center in Chicago. The Spartans will play the second game of Friday's evening session (approximately 9 p.m. ET) against the winner of a game between No. 6 UCLA and either Rutgers or Minnesota.
