20th-Ranked Spartan Men’s Tennis Ends West Coast Road Trip With 4-0 Victory Over Ducks On Sunday

MSU earns victory in Eugene for the first time ever.
EUGENE, Ore. – No. 20 Michigan State men's tennis earned its first-ever victory in Eugene, Ore. on Sunday after a 4-0 triumph over the No. 53-ranked Ducks to end their west coast road trip.
The Spartans have had an incredible spring season, earning wins over multiple highly ranked teams and remaining dominant in the Big Ten Conference. Michigan State now holds an overall record of 13-7, and is on a 10-match win streak, moving to 10-0 in B1G play. Oregon is also 13-7 overall and 4-5 in league play. The Ducks entered the weekend undefeated at home, but lost to both Michigan State on Sunday and losing to Michigan on Friday.
Claiming the doubles point, the Spartans took an early lead over the Ducks. At No. 1 doubles, senior Ozan Baris and sophomore Matthew Forbes squared off against the No. 40-ranked Ducks' duo of Matthew Burton and Pierre Mouesca, earning a swift victory 6-1. Following their lead, junior Taym Alazmeh and senior David Saye defeated Oregon's Cameron Burton and Lachlan Robertson, 6-4.
Sophomore Mitchell Sheldon teamed up with redshirt senior Aristotelis Thanos opposite Oregon's Vlad Breazu and Declan Galligan and were up 5-3 before their match went unfinished.
After claiming the doubles point, the Green & White rattled off three more victories in singles play to strengthen the Spartan lead. On the board first was Sheldon, taking down Lachlan Robertson at 6-1 in the first set and going up 4-2 in the second before the match was forfeited. Next on the board, at No. 1 singles, Thanos defeated his opponent Vlad Breazu in straight sets 6-3, 6-2. After a tense three set battle, Alazmeh came out victorious after defeating Sam Olszakowski 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.
Three matches went unfinished. At No. 2 singles, Forbes won his first set, 7-5, and was down 2-5 in the second before the match went unfinished. At No. 3 singles, No. 53-ranked Baris won his first set 6-1, lost the second 3-6, and was up 4-1 in the third before going unfinished. At No. 6 singles, David Saye won the first set 7-6 (7-5) and was down 2-4 in the second, before the match aso went unfinished.
Up next, the Spartans head down the road to take on in-state rivals, the Michigan Wolverines, Saturday, April 11, in Ann Arbor, Mich., at 5 p.m.
