Former Spartan hockey player Dan Sturges joined the MSU hockey staff in August 2019 and serves as the program’s Director of Hockey Operations.
Sturges returned to Michigan State from the University of Colorado where he coached two of the school’s ACHA programs. Sturges was head coach of Colorado’s ACHA DII team for three seasons from 2016-19 before being elevated to the top job of the ACHA DI program in spring 2019. He was named the Big Mountain Hockey Conference Coach of the Year in 2018 while leading his team to the league’s playoff title.
Simultaneously with his head coaching duties at Colorado, Sturges also served as an assistant coach from 2017-19 at Valor Christian High School where he worked under former Spartan assistant and Denver head coach George Gwozdecky.
Sturges, who earned his degree from MSU in psychology, played for the Spartans for four seasons (2005-09) and was a member of the 2007 National Championship team. While at Michigan State, the Verona, Wisconsin native was highly involved with Student-Athlete Support Services, where he spearheaded several community service initiatives, including co-founding the hockey team’s “Shoot for a Cure” campaign to help fight children's cancer.
Sturges and his wife Becky, a former field hockey student-athlete at Michigan State, have two sons, Kellan and Cooper.
