Hall's Goal Lifts Green Over White

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Adam Hall's second goal of the game with just 1:07 remaining lifted the Green team to a 3-2 victory over the White team in the Michigan State hockey team's annual intrasquad game.
The sophomore right wing crashed the net and put home a rebound on junior defenseman Brody Brandstatter's shot from the point for the game-winner.
"He gets the goals in front of the net," said head coach Ron Mason, who watched the game from Munn Ice Arena's under construction club seating while his assistants led the two teams. "The game-winner, as he does, he found the puck in front of the net and put it away."
Hall scored an earlier goal in less characteristic fashion, opening the scoring on a breakaway with 2:07 left in the first period.
"(Senior defenseman Brad) Hodgins made a great pass and sent me on a breakaway," Hall said. "(Freshman goaltender) Ryan Miller covers a lot of net, so I wanted to get him moving. He knows I like to go to my backhand in practice, so I went forehand."
Senior center and team captain Shawn Horcoff scored just 36 seconds later to give the Green team a 2-0 lead in what had been a fairly sloppy first period.
"The game got better as it went along," Mason said. "It was sluggish in the first period, but the tempo picked up in the second and the players maintained that in the third period."
Down, 2-0, entering the second, the White team bounced back with a second-period goal from freshman left wing Brian Maloney. Maloney batted the puck out of the air and - despite the protests from the Green team that he hit it with a high stick - the goal cut the lead to 2-1 Green.
White tied the score on an Andrew Bogle goal, as the junior center shot high from in close on the power play on junior goaltender Joe Blackburn to tie the score at 2-2.
The game looked headed to overtime before Hall scored to give Green the victory, the first win in five years for the Green team.
Michigan State returns to action with an exhibition game against Guelph Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. in Munn Ice Arena. A limited number of tickets will be available in the MSU Athletic Ticket Office in Jenison Field House on Monday at 10 a.m.
The Spartans open the regular season next Saturday against the team which they beat to reach last year's NCAA Frozen Four, Colorado College. That game begins at 9:05 p.m. EDT in Colorado Springs.
