WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Setter Vicki Basil's first Big Ten start in two years was supposed to result in a victory. Purdue thought otherwise as it shocked Michigan State 15-11, 5-10, 15-13 on Friday, Oct. 1 in West Lafayette, Ind. It was Purdue's first win over MSU since Nov. 13, 1993, a span of 11 matches. The victory was also the first conference win for the Boilermakers in 1999.
Aneska Arosarena hit 29 kills to lead Purdue, while Julie Doud added 20 more as the Boilers outhit MSU .357-.233. Sarah Gustin led the Spartans with 18 kills on .389 hitting, along with seven digs and three blocks. Jessica Sanborn and Erin Hartley each scored 15 kills. Sanborn tallied her 500th career kill in game three and added seven blocks in the match.
In game one, Michigan State fell into a 1-10 hole before finding its offense. Down 2-3, the Spartans stormed back with nine straight points. Withstanding the MSU onslaught, Purdue notched three consecutive kills to seal the game, 15-11.
The Spartans dug themselves into an even deeper hole in game two, giving the Boilermakers seven-straight points before a Gustin kill put them on the board. MSU then came back by scoring six straight points, two of them from Angela Morley blocks. Up 7-6, however, Purdue took control of the game. With the Boilers in position to win the game at 14-8, the Spartans made them serve for game point 6 times before Purdue could finalize a 15-10 victory.
MSU falls to 11-4 on the season and 1-2 in the Big Ten. Purdue raises its record to 9-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play. The Spartans travel to No. 20 Wisconsin for Saturday's match at 7 p.m. CT. The match will be televised by FoxSports Chicago and will be aired tape-delayed on Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. Fans in East Lansing can hear the match on the radio, beginning at 8 p.m. ET on WVFN-730 AM.
