Note of the Night
Fantastic freshmen ? Last year, Michigan State freshmen did not combine for more than two goals in a game until the next-to-last game of the season (the memorable NCAA quarterfinal win over Colorado College in which freshmen scored all four goals). Last night, in just the second game of the year, three MSU freshmen combined for four goals, including each of the first three.
In Michigan State?s last two victories, freshmen have scored eight of nine goals.
Five More Notes No Media Person Should Be Without
1. Five alive ? Michigan State scored five goals last night after going 18 games without scoring as many as five goals. The Spartans went the last 17 games of 1998-99 and the first game of this season since a 5-1 win over Miami, Jan. 16, 1999.
2. A Fast learner ? Who would have thought a freshman defenseman could ever lead the Spartans in scoring? Brad Fast does, with a goal and two assists (three points) through two games. He had a goal and an assist last night.
3. The main course ? Michigan State improved to 15-3-2 all-time in CCHA openers since joining the conference in 1981-82. The Spartans finished the 1990s 7-1-2 in CCHA openers.
4. Rebounders ? Michigan State improved to 11-0-1 following a loss in the last three seasons. MSU has not lost back-to-back games since the end of the 1996-97 season.
5. Shooting gallery ? Michigan State?s 41 shots on goal equaled its most since firing 44 shots against Ohio State, Nov. 6, 1998. Perhaps most impressive, in 62 shot attempts only 21 did not find their way to the net (11 blocked, eight off target, two pipes).
Others Receiving Votes
Money Maloney ? Counting the Guelph game, freshman left wing Brian Maloney would have five goals and an assist (six points) in three games.
Patch things up ? Junior left wing Sean Patchell, who had three goals all of last season, has a point in each of MSU?s last three games.
The killing fields ? After allowing three goals on nine power-play opportunities at Colorado College, MSU killed off 10-of-11 UNO chances last night and scored a short-handed goal. Last year in CCHA play, MSU scored 11 short-handed goals and only allowed nine power-play goals.
