? HARTLEY NAMED BIG TEN PLAYER OF WEEK: Erin Hartley is the Big Ten Player of the Week, the first POW award of her career. The sophomore averaged 6.00 kills, 3.33 digs and 1.00 blocks per game while hitting .604 in wins over Michigan and Northwestern. Against Michigan she tallied a match-high 20 kills on a career-best .600 hitting percentage. She also hit her 500th career kill in that match. Versus Northwestern, Hartley again led all hitters with 16 kills and bettered her career percentage by hitting .607. She also added 11 digs in the Northwestern match for her fourth double-double of the season.
? STATE UPDATE: Michigan State defeated Michigan last Wednesday, Oct. 13, 3-0 (15-9, 15-6, 15-5) to break a four match losing streak. With the win, MSU is up 1-0 in the 1999 State Pride series. On Friday, Oct. 15, MSU defeated Northwestern, 3-0 (15-8, 15-2, 15-2), its 10th-straight win over the Wildcats.
? ILLINOIS: No. 20 Illinois is 11-3 overall, 7-1 in the Big Ten. The Fighting Illini won two last weekend, defeating Iowa, 3-0 (15-6, 15-7, 15-5), and Minnesota, 3-1 (15-13, 15-6, 2-15, 16-14. The team has won five consecutive matches and 11 of its last 12. Shadia Haddad and Betsy Spicer lead the team with 3.92 and 3.27 kills per game, respectively. Tracey Marshall is third on the team at 2.85 kills per game but leads the team in digs at 2.81 pg. Setter Melissa Beitz averages 12.90 assists per contest while Spicer is the Illini?s leading blocker at 1.31 pg. Illinois leads the series, 27-13. Michigan State won the last meeting in Champaign on Nov. 4, 1998, 15-12, 8-15, 15-8, 15-10. Michigan State has won seven of the last eight meetings between the two teams.
? INDIANA: The Hoosiers are 12-5 overall, 3-5 in the Big Ten. Indiana split last weekend, losing 1-3 (2-15, 15-9, 15-9, 9-15) to Minnesota and defeating Iowa, 3-1 (15-13, 9-15, 15-10, 15-10). Indiana won its first nine matches in a row but since has won just three of its last eight. Prior to the Iowa match, Amanda Welter and Ryann Connors were leading the team at 4.04 and 4.02 kills per game, respectively. Setters Laura Garnder and Kristina Sanderson were leading the team with 11.00 and 8.40 assists, respectively, while Cydryce Carter was tops with 2.63 digs and 1.03 blocks per game. Indiana leads the series, 23-22. Michigan State won the last meeting in East Lansing on Oct. 31, 1998, 15-7, 5-15, 15-7, 15-12. MSU has won 10 of the last 11 meetings between the last two schools.
? THAT?S A BIG NEGATIVE: Michigan hit -.017 against Michigan State on Oct. 13 in Jenison Field House to MSU?s .283. The last time MSU held an opponent to a negative hitting percentage was against Niagara in the WMU Ameritech Invitational on Sept. 17 (-.107). Last year no State opponent was held to less than .000.
? 500: Erin Hartley tallied the 500th kill of her career against Michigan on Wednesday. She led all hitters with 16 kills on .600 (16-1-25) hitting, ending the match with 501 career ka-booms. Hartley now has 521 career kills after leading MSU wih 20 against Northwestern on Oct. 15.
? 600: Sarah Gustin hit the 600th kill of her career against Michigan on Oct. 13. She now has 616.
? WAIT FOR ME!: Jessica Sanborn needs just 12 kills for 500 in her Michigan State career. ? PROVING POINTS: MSU has held opponents to 12 total points or less in a match on two occasions this season: versus Niagara on Sept. 17 (15-4, 15-0, 15-1) and versus Northwestern (15-8, 15-2, 15-2). Prior to this season, State had not held an opponent to 12 points or under since Oct. 18, 1997 against Minnesota (15-1, 15-3, 15-8). ? LOOKING AHEAD: Were the season to end today, MSU?s team hitting percentage of .285 would be first all-time in the State single-season record book.
? A PINCH OF BASIL: Junior setter Vicki Basil is in seventh place on the MSU all-time assists chart. She now has 1,689 in her career, the eighth player in spartan history to record more than 1,500. Sixth place is held by Amy Rauch (199-92) with 1,697.
? PERFECT GPAs: Two MSU players are averaging better than 4.00 kills per game. Sarah Gustin and Erin Hartley is earining extra credit by averaging 4.21 pg, while Erin Hartley comes in at 4.15.
? GOOD ATTENDANCE TOO: Michigan State was ranked 24th in the nation in attendance last week. The Spartans are averaging 777 fans per match at home through 10 matches this season.
? TEAM BLOCK: Michigan State has recorded 198.5 blocks as a team this season. Were the season to end today, MSU?s total would rank it 14th on the school?s single-season chart. Last year, the Spartans ended with 394 total blocks, nine short of the school record of 403, established in 1997.
