The CHS Note of the Weekend
Great games ? The College Hockey Showcase enters its seventh year of bringing together Big Ten rivals and college hockey powerhouses Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Wisconsin. The event has a history of close games, with 14 of its 24 games all-time being tied or decided by one goal, including three of four last season. The fourth game last year was decided by two goals, including an empty-netter.
Four reasons these teams showcase college hockey
1. Title towns ? Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Wisconsin have combined to win 19 championships in the 52 years of NCAA tournaments.
2. That?s a lot of wins ? The four teams in the College Hockey Showcase are all among the top 15 winningest programs in college hockey history by percentage. They have combined to win 4,330 games.
3. See you in the springtime ? Minnesota (No. 1, 24), Michigan (No. 3, 22), Michigan State (No. 5, 19) and Wisconsin (No. 8, 16) are all among the top eight schools in NCAA tournament appearances with a combined 81 appearances between them.
4. Behind the benches ? Three of the four coaches in the College Hockey Showcase are among the top 16 in all-time college victories (Ron Mason No. 1 at 847, Jeff Sauer No. 5 at 596, Red Berenson No. 16 at 404) and the fourth, Minnesota?s Don Lucia, is a two-time WCHA and one-time National Coach of the Year.
Did You Know?
History lesson ? Before Michigan State and Michigan joined the CCHA, these four teams competed for the Big Ten championship. Between 1959 and 1981, Minnesota captured 10 titles, while Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin each took home five (including co-champs).
History lesson II ? The first four College Hockey Showcases were held at neutral sites, before the tournament shifted to its current format on campus sites in 1997.
Top teams ? College Hockey Showcase teams hold three of the nation?s top six positions in this week?s U.S. College Hockey Online polls (No. 3 Wisconsin, No. 4 Michigan State and No. 6 Michigan).
Unofficial champs ? Five teams have gone 2-0 in the College Hockey Showcase. Minnesota finished 2-0 in 1994 and 1995, while Michigan won both games in 1996. Michigan and Michigan State both swept their home games in 1997, the first year of on-campus games. Michigan (1-0-1) had the best record in the CHS last season.
Golden games ? Minnesota is tied for the second-best record in College Hockey Showcase history at 7-5, but has scored fewer goals (39) than it has allowed (41). Six of the Golden Gophers? seven College Hockey Showcase victories have been by one goal.
Curtain calls ? Michigan?s Mark Kosick is the top active scorer in College Hockey Showcase play with five assists the last two years. Minnesota sophomore Jordan Leopold is the only active player with two goals in CHS action.
