EAST LANSING, Mich. - The pressure on Michigan State to get a goal built and built through two scoreless periods against Nebraska-Omaha Friday night.
When Mike York finally scored at 5:02 of the third, the deafening sound of Munn Arena's new foghorn was a fitting climax to the Spartans' wait.
The Spartans clamped down on the Mavericks defensively the rest of the way and added a second blast to win, 2-0.
MSU set two school records: tying the mark of for a home unbeaten streak at 20 games and allowing the fewest shots on goal in a game (nine).
The Spartans improve to 9-3-2 overall (6-2-2 CCHA). Nebraska-Omaha is 2-11-0.
After York's goal, freshman Shawn Mather was credited with a goal directed in by a Maverick defenseman on an MSU power play at 12:17 of the third.
Junior goaltender Mike Gresl made just his second career start for the Spartans and posted his first career win, also his first shutout. Several of the nine saves Gresl made were difficult ones.
"I didn't get a lot of work, but when I did see a shot it was a quality shot," Gresl said. "I felt good right away. I had the attitude that I was just going to go out and have fun."
Gresl, who hadn't played yet this season, figures to get a great deal more work as sophomore goaltender Joe Blackburn heads to the U.S. National Junior Team training camp. Blackburn could be out of the Spartan lineup for as many as five games while at the World Junior Championship.
For York, it was his fourth goal of the season. He scored through a screen while coming out from behind the net to the goalie's right.
