EAST LANSING, Mich. - Ohio State scored three second-period goals to lead the Buckeyes to a 3-2 victory over the Spartan hockey team Friday night, handing MSU its first loss of the season.
Michigan State outshot the Buckeyes 37-17 but couldnt solve goaltender Jeff Maund, who made 35 saves.
After a scoreless first period, OSUs Jean-Francois Dufour scored at the 6:15 mark of the second. Ohio State built a 2-0 lead on a short-handed goal midway through the period, prompting Michigan State head coach Ron Mason to take his time out.
The Spartans responded, scoring on that same power play on a perfect deflection by freshman right wing Adam Hall. Hall got assists from Brad Hodgins and Mike York, as York became just the 23rd Spartan to record 100 career assists.
Ohio State answered again, however, as Louie Colsant scored on a 2-on-1 very much like the short-handed goal.
"We have to make sure we keep someone high in those situations," York said. "It hurts when we give them their goals."
The Spartans carried the play in the third period, outshooting OSU 13-3. They pulled within one at the 10:30 mark thanks to good work by the fourth line of Shawn Mather, Curtis Gemmel and John Nail. Mather converted on Hodgins second assist of the night, with Nail earning the second assist.
Michigan State (5-1-2 overall, 4-1-2 CCHA) returns to action tomorrow night at Miami in Oxford, Ohio.
