EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior fullback Garett Gould has been presented the John S. Pingel Award, a $1,000 postgraduate scholarship, by the Michigan Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. The award is named in honor of the former Michigan State All-America halfback and National Football Foundation Hall of Famer from Mt. Clemens, Mich.
The selection is based upon the candidate's academic achievement, athletic ability and leadership qualities.
Gould, a mechanical engineering major, sports a 3.2 grade-point average and this winter, he will be named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team for the fourth year in a row. During his collegiate career, he has served as both a peer leader and volunteer speaker for the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) program.
A three-year starter, Gould has been utilized primarily as a blocking back, helping Sedrick Irvin become only the second player in MSU history to record three-straight 1,000-yard rushing seasons from 1996-98. The 6-foot-2, 248-pounder from Troy, Mich., has been best described as an "offensive guard in the backfield" by MSU offensive coordinator Gary Tranquill. Gould was one of six players elected team captain by his peers prior to the 1998 season.
Gould will be honored at an awards ceremony Wednesday, Dec. 9 in Livonia.
