Pat Shurmur, who served as Michigan State's tight ends coach for the last eight seasons, has been appointed offensive line coach (centers and guards) at Stanford. Shurmur signed a contract at Stanford March 17.
Michigan State head football coach Nick Saban:
"Pat Shurmur is a great Spartan. He has done an outstanding job here for the last eight years. Michigan State is the only place Pat has ever coached and from a professional standpoint, he felt that he needed an opportunity to grow somewhere else as a coach. Pat is a class guy, and I wish him only the best of luck at Stanford."
Stanford offensive line (centers and guards) coach Pat Shurmur:
"As much as I love Michigan State, I felt I needed to expand my foundation as a football coach. I wouldnit have left Michigan State for just any other job. Stanford is a well-respected program and Tyrone Willingham is a tremendous coach. As much as leaving Michigan State saddens me, I look forward to the new opportunities here at Stanford. And I'm excited about increasing my knowledge of the West Coast offense.
"Michigan State provided me some great opportunities and a lifetime of memories. I earned two degrees at Michigan State, won two Big Ten titles, played in the Rose Bowl and coached there. I was around a lot of great people at Michigan State. I married a Spartan and we had three kids in East Lansing. Michigan State gave me a great deal and Iim proud to have contributed to Michigan Stateis success.
"Coach Saban has been very good to me and very supportive over the years. As a young coach, he really schooled me in this profession. I wish Coach Saban and the Spartan football program continued success."
