EAST LANSING, Mich. - Senior center Shawn Horcoff (Castlegar, B.C.) has been elected captain of the 1999-2000 Michigan State hockey team by his teammates, head coach Ron Mason announced today. Junior right wing Rustyn Dolyny (Fort Frances, Ont.) and senior defenseman Mike Weaver (Bramalea, Ont.) were elected assistant captains.
"I think the players have made three excellent choices in Shawn, Rustyn and Mike," Mason said. "They all have strong work ethics and the rest of the team respects that. I think they will do a really nice job for us."
Horcoff, who was an assistant captain last year, is the Spartans' top returning scorer after recording 12 goals and 25 assists (37 points) in 39 games in 1998-99. He was tied for second on the team in scoring behind outgoing captain Mike York.
Weaver was a second-team All-American a year ago and a first-team All-CCHA selection. Also voted the CCHA's Best Defensive Defenseman, he had a goal and six assists while playing in all 42 games.
Dolyny finished fourth on the '98-99 Spartans in points and third in goals with 18 goals and 15 assists (33 points) in 41 games.
Mason added that the Spartans may elect an additional assistant captain before the season kicks off with the Green & White Game on Friday, Oct. 1. The regular season begins in the Hall of Fame Game at Colorado College on Saturday, Oct. 9.
