EAST LANSING, Mich. - Head hockey coach Ron Mason was honored by the Sparrow Foundation for his efforts with the Children's Miracle Network and the Ron Mason Fund for Kids at last Friday's Blue Line Club Luncheon.
Debbie Petersmark, development manager of the Children's Miracle Network for the Sparrow Foundation, presented Mason with a plaque to honor his involvement with the foundation. A pre-game tailgate was held for the Ron Mason Fund for Kids prior to that night's Michigan game.
"The Sparrow Foundation and the Pediatric Rehabilitation Department are grateful to Ron and Marion Mason for their leadership gift to establish the Ron Mason Fund," Petersmark said at the Luncheon, which was held at the Michigan Athletic Club. "The fund has raised more than $270,000 in just one year, and today we wish to publicly honor Ron for his philanthropy, his time and the enthusiasm he brings to the Children's Miracle Network and everything he does for the kids at Sparrow."
Mason has served as the Honorary Chair of the Children's Miracle Network in Lansing since 1990.
Sparrow's Children's Miracle Network has grown to be one of the most successful fundraising programs in the country, raising more than $1.3 million in 199 alone, to benefit the Sparrow Regional Children's Center. Although one of the smaller CMN-affiliated hospitals (ranking 106th out of 170), Sparrow ranks first in average pledge amount, ninth in per-captita fundraising and 30th in overall funds raised.
In December of 1998, Ron and the Sparrow Foundation established the Ron Mason Fund for Kids to benefit the Pediatric Rehabilitation Department. Children recovering from accidents, injuries, surgery, birth defects and diseases make more than 15,000 visits to Sparrow for rehabilitation care each year.
