MSU/IOWA SERIES NOTES -
Iowa leads it 16-15-2, including an 8-8-1 record in games played in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes have won three of the last four and four of the last six meetings. Michigan State's last win in Kinnick Stadium came on Oct. 7, 1989, 17-14.
THE LAST MEETING -
Michigan State scored on its first possession for the first time in 1999 and dominated from the outset, defeating Iowa, 49-3, in Spartan Stadium on Oct. 2. Each of Michigan State's first five drives resulted in touchdowns, including three scores by Plaxico Burress, as he tied the school record for TD catches in a game. Bill Burke tied the school record for TD passes in a game with four before he left the game in the second quarter with a 28-0 lead. Back-up QB Ryan Van Dyke built on the lead with two TD passes of his own, as the Spartans set a school record with six TD throws total.
An 86-yard kickoff return to start the second half marked the only time that Iowa penetrated the MSU 40-yard line, and it set up a field goal to spoil the shutout bid. The Spartan defense was brilliant, allowing only 107 total yards, including only 7 yards on the ground, and giving up only one first down in the first half (on Iowa's first play from scrimmage). Cedric Henry finished the scoring with a 70-yard punt return on his first career runback.
MSU/IOWA COACHING CONNECTIONS -
* Iowa defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach Norm Parker spent 12 years as an assistant coach at Michigan State under George Perles (1983-94). During his tenure at Michigan State, Parker coached outside linebackers and served as defensive coordinator for six years (1988-93).
* Iowa defensive backs coach Phil Parker, a 1986 Michigan State graduate, was a four-year letterman and three-time first-team All-Big Ten defensive back for the Spartans from 1982-85. Parker was named MVP of the 1984 Cherry Bowl and also helped lead the Spartans to a trip to the 1985 All-American Bowl. He later served as a graduate assistant under George Perles for the 1987 Big Ten and 1988 Rose Bowl championship team. Parker still ranks third among MSU's career leaders in interceptions with 16.
