MSU Hockey Stays Atop National Polls

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State hockey team strengthened its hold on the top spot in this week's USA Today/American Hockey Magazine and U.S. College Hockey Online polls. Coach Ron Mason's Spartans wrapped up the first half of the regular season with a 12-1-4 overall record and extended their unbeaten streak to 14 (11-0-3) with a tie and win against Ferris State last weekend.
MSU received 37 of 40 first-place votes and 595 points in the USCHO poll. Second-ranked Boston College, the Spartans' opponent in the first round of the Great Lakes Invitational in Detroit on Dec. 29, and third-rated North Dakota switched positions from last week. Michigan, New Hampshire and Western Michigan comprise the rest of the top six.
The Spartans captured 16 of 18 first-place votes and 265 total points in the USA Today rankings, with Boston College, North Dakota, Michigan, New Hampshire and Western Michigan rounding out the top six. North Dakota and Michigan each garnered one first-place vote.
Other Central Collegiate Hockey Association teams in this week's rankings are Ohio State (12th USCHO, receiving votes USA Today), Northern Michigan (15th USCHO, 13th USA Today) and Miami (receiving votes in both polls).
