EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior center Shawn Horcoff (Castlegar, B.C.) collected four awards, including Most Valuable Player honors, at the 2000 Spartan Hockey Awards Banquet tonight at Holiday Inn South in Lansing.
Horcoff also earned the Blue Line Club President's Award (highest GPA among the senior class), the Outstanding Offensive Player Award and the Outstanding Senior Award. Those cap off a crowded trophy case for Horcoff this season, as he also earned an unprecedented five CCHA individual awards as well as first-team All-America honors.
"These awards are a testament to how well-rounded Shawn is," head coach Ron Mason said. "That's true both on the ice and off the ice. He was a complete player for us this year and our leader all season long."
Other honorees included freshman goaltender Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.), junior right wing John Nail (Brampton, Ont.), senior defenseman Mike Weaver (Bramalea, Ont.), senior goaltender Mike Gresl (Amherst Junction, Wis.) and junior left wing Damon Whitten (Brighton, Mich.).
Former Spartan Doug Roberts (1962-65), the first All-American forward in Spartan hockey history, was honored with the Distinguished Alumnus Award. Roberts enjoyed a 10-year National Hockey League career, including stops with the Detroit Red Wings, the Oakland/California Seals and the Boston Bruins. He is currently the head hockey coach at Connecticut College, where he has compiled a 230-211-19 record in 21 seasons.
