EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State goaltender Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.) has been named Men's Division I Defensive Player of the Week by U.S. College Hockey Online.
The junior led the Spartans to a two-game sweep over then no.-8 Northern Michigan, stopping 38 of 40 shots he faced in Friday's 4-2 MSU win and making 41 saves - one short of his career high - in a 3-0 shutout of the Wildcats Saturday. The 2001 Hobey Baker Memorial Award winner now has six shutouts on the season and an NCAA-record 24 for his career. Miller's efforts also earned him CCHA Defensive Player of the Week honors. He's won the CCHA and USCHO weekly awards twice this season.
Miller currently leads the CCHA and ranks third nationally with a 1.55 goals against average in addition to a 12-3-2 record and a .944 saves percentage, which is also third best among NCAA Division I goalies. In his last 10 games, Miller is 8-1-1 with a 1.11 goals against average and a .965 saves percentage.
The Spartans are in the midst of a three-week holiday break. They resume play Dec. 28-29, when they take part in the 37th annual Great Lakes Invitational at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.
