RAVENNA, Ohio - The Michigan State men's golf team is tied for fourth place after one round of the FirstEnergy Intercollegiate Friday (April 20), hosted by Kent State University. The Spartans shot a first-round score of 296 and trail current tournament- leader Purdue by only six strokes. Due to rain and casual water on the Windmill Lakes Golf Club (par-70, 6,936 yards) the second round was canceled.
Michigan State was led by senior co-captain Brent Goik (Bay City, Mich.), who shot a one over par 71 on the day. Goik enters Saturday's final round in third place.
The Spartans also received a solid performance from junior Nathan Clark (Mason, Mich.). Clark, who did not participate in last week's Robert Kepler Invitational, shot a 73 Friday.
Dennis Riedel (St. Clair, Mich.), who is coming off a sixth-place finish at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate last week (April 14-15), carded a 75 for the day.
Michigan State sophomore John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.) recorded a 77 for his round while fellow sophomore Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.) finished Friday with a 78.
The second round will not be made up, so the tournament's final round gets underway Saturday morning.
