MUSKEGON, Mich. - Michigan State golfer John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.) carded a four-under-par 68 to win the U.S. Open local qualifier at Muskegon Country Club Monday (May 20).
The Spartan senior-to-be, whose score was two strokes better than runner-up Adam Speirs, is one of four golfers to advance to U.S. Open sectional play next month. A 2002 All-Big Ten men's golf selection, Koskinen will attend a sectional qualifier at TPC at River's Bend in Cincinnati, Ohio, June 3. It's the second straight year he's won the local qualifying tournament - Koskinen earned medalist honors at last year's event at Hunter's Ridge Golf Course in Howell, Mich., by shooting a 68.
The 2002 U.S. Open takes place June 13-16 at Bethpage Black Golf Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.
