NOTRE DAME, IND. - Sophomore netminder Matt Migliaccio (Wyandotte, Mich.) stopped 40-of-41 shots, including 19 in the final stanza as Michigan State picked up a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Notre Dame on Friday night (Jan. 24). The win was the sixth in the row for the Spartan hockey squad as MSU improved to 14-9-1 overall and 10-6 in the CCHA, while Notre Dame falls to 9-12-4 overall, 7-9-1 in conference action.
"I thought that (Matt) Migliaccio played very solid," said MSU head coach Rick Comley. "It is now six games in a row that he has given us an excellence performance. There were some pucks that hit him that he didn't see, but he had great presence in the third period and obviously, held us in the game."
Sophomore forward Mike Lalonde (Chetwynd, B.C.) scored the first goal of the evening on the power play at the 9:04 mark of the second period. Lalonde fired a shot from the right face-off circle that beat ND goalie Morgan Cey. David Booth (Washington, Mich.) and John-Michael Liles (Zionsville, Ind.) gained the assists on Lalonde's goal.
The Spartans made it 2-0 with another power play marker at the 15:42 mark as Kevin Estrada (Surrey, B.C.) tucked the puck under Cey. MSU controlled play as Ash Goldie (London, Ont.) held the puck along the boards and Brad Fast (Fort St. John, B.C.) dug it out. Fast threw the puck over to Estrada who slipped it past Cey. Estrada has scored a goal in three consecutive games.
The Fighting Irish had two solid chances with 3.1 second left, but Migliaccio made two key saves to hold the Irish off the scoreboard through two periods.
Notre Dame cut the lead to one, 2-1 with a power play goal at the 8:33 mark of the third stanza. Migliaccio made the initial save on Rob Globke, but John Wroblewski followed through on the rebound for his 11th goal of the season.
The Fighting Irish, who outshot the Spartans, 20-to-1 in the third period and 41-to-25 for the game, had several chances in the final minute. Migliaccio made a point-blank save on Globke and stopped a tough shot from Brett Lebda.
Michigan State and Notre Dame close out the two-game series tomorrow night (Jan. 25) with at 7:05 p.m. face-off at the Joyce Center.
