EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team heads south to Durham, N.C., for their final event of the fall season this weekend (Oct. 19-20). The Duke Golf Classic will be held at the par-72, 7,045 yard Duke Golf Club. The 54-hole tournament begins with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun Sunday morning and culminates Monday afternoon.
"It's a good golf course. It's very hilly and the 36 holes will be a good, hard test," said Coach Mark Hankins.
The Spartans will be part of a great field this week that includes Toledo and Illinois, who are in Michigan State's district as well as host team Duke. Other teams in the field include: Virginia Tech, Tulsa, Texas Tech, UNC-Wilmington, North Carolina, Kansas State, Furman, Florida Southern, Coastal Carolina, Old Dominion, Virginia and Commonwealth.
"There a lot of quality teams and it gives a chance to play some of the strong teams in the southeast," Hankins said.
Michigan State is coming off a 12th place finish at last week's Windon Memorial Classic. Junior Andrew Ruthkoski's (Muskegon, Mich.) 223 total was good for 28th place to lead the Spartans. A second round 69 highlighted Ruthkoski's tournament.
Freshman Craig Revell (Kingston, Ont.) tied for 43rd (71-79-75) while senior Ben Fox (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was one-shot higher finishing in a tie for 49th.
Freshman Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and junior James Chestnut (Grand Blanc, Mich.) rounded out the top five for the team shooting 228 and 230, respectively.
