HAAMENLINNA, Finland - Team USA posted an 8-0 shutout of Austria in its first game of the 2004 World Junior Championships on Friday, Dec. 26. With the win, the U.S. squad picked up two points in preliminary round action. Zach Parise (North Dakota) and Patrick Eaves (Boston College) combined to score seven points in the game, including Parise's hat trick. Eaves, who was named the team's top player in the game, registered a goal and added two assists.
Team USA held a 61-to-15 edge in shots on goal as US goalie Al Montoya (Michigan) stopped 15 shots. Austrian goaltender Mathias Lange stopped 53-of-61 shots.
Michigan State sophomore forward David Booth (Washington, Mich.) and sophomore defenseman Corey Potter (Mason, Mich.) each saw action in the game. Booth finished with one penalty, while Potter did not appear on the scoresheet. Freshman netminder Dominic Vicari (Clinton Township, Mich.) was Montoya's back-up.
Team USA returns to action on Sunday, Dec. 28, at 8 a.m. EST, against Slovakia.
