EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State men's golf team travels to the historic Inverness Club for the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio, this weekend (Sept. 19-20). The 54-hole tournament consists of 15 teams and will be one of the best fields of the year. Friday's play will consist of 36 holes beginning with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m., and Saturday will get under way with a 2 p.m. shotgun.
The Inverness Club is one of Golf Digest's top 100 courses and has been host to eight major championships.
"It's a good golf course, and we'll probably have one of the better fields in the country," Coach Mark Hankins said. "Our goal once again will be to finish in the top three."
Along with the host team Toledo, the field at Inverness consists of No. 2 ranked UCLA, No. 9 Augusta State, No. 24 Minnesota, No. 26 Oklahoma, No. 29 Illinois, No. 30 Duke as well as Central Florida, Kansas State, Kent State, Missouri, New Mexico, Northwestern and Notre Dame.
The Spartans are coming of a strong start to the season with a third-place finish in last week's Badger Invitational in Madison, Wis. Freshman Craig Revell (Kingston, Ont.) was medalist in his first college event shooting a 4-under par 140 in the rain-shortened event.
"Craig is very consistent and real solid; he doesn't make mistakes," Hankins said.
Freshman Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and redshirt freshman Zac Zedrick (Danville, Ill.) finished in a seven-way tie for ninth place firing 149, respectively. Also competing for the Spartans was senior Ben Fox (Fort Wayne, Ind.), who finished in a tie for 25th and junior Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) finished 31st.
"It was our initial voyage for three guys," Hankins said. "It's just a matter of going out and playing good."
