Post-Game Quotes
MSU Head Coach Rick Comley
On the play of the goalies and his team...
"I mean he (BGSU goalie Jordon Sigalet) was really good obviously, but we had too many penalties; two silly, silly penalties."
On MSU's 5-on-3 opportunity late in the game...
"That was your opportunity. We fought hard, didn't quit playing, and continued to generate shots. And when you get a chance at 5-on-3, (Colton) Fretter, who has been a real good player for us, forced a couple shots and got them blocked."
On the team's 47 shots on goal...
"Scoring just improves the quality of play you watch. I thought we played really well early, and then all of a sudden you're behind. You can't score and then you're behind two, trying to pick them up again so they don't quit playing. We came out in the third and battled back again, and it was the inability to have any polish around the net with the puck; that makes it really tough."
On the offense producing more goals...
"We average 35 shots a game; 47 tonight. You can't make people scorers if they're not scorers. They're trying hard and generating shots, and Sigalet made a lot of great saves tonight. We had a lot of really good shots too. My only disappointment is the bad penalties. Sometimes you get the lucky breaks around the net, and right now we're not."
On Slater's penalty shot and Adam Nightingale's break away in the first period...
"They were difference makers, definitely. Both guys came in and made good moves, just didn't get it in the net."
BGSU Head Coach Scott Paluch
On the game overall ...
"It was a game that clearly, just like a lot of CCHA games, where it comes down to the stretch and that opportunity was given to us. Jordan Sigalet was fantastic in the game, especially in the third period. Then again I thought we made enough of the plays down the stretch to win a game. I thought Michigan State had some great chances, and Jordan was very good and we were opportunistic enough on our power play to get the two goals. I really liked the way we were able to kill off the five-on-three down the stretch there to win the hockey game. This is a big two points for us."
On the play of SR G Jordan Sigalet ...
"He's able to make a lot of different saves. Tonight - talk about running the gamut, you're looking at shorthanded breakaways, a penalty shot, good power-play chances, and there's a tough hop there with about 20 seconds left, and I'm not quite sure how that stayed out. Jordan gives us an opportunity, and he did that tonight, and I thought our team hung in there."
On preparing his team for Saturday night ...
"Now we move ahead, and the biggest thing is that there's certainly no guarantees going back to your home ice. I think we understand Michigan State - they're a good hockey team. We're going to have to really play a very good game, against a very good team, at home, if we're going to be successful tomorrow."
MSU Player Quotes
Jim Slater, Sr., F
On the game...
"It was a frustrating especially with what is on the line. It was a tough one. We had some good shots; the goalie (Jordan Sigalet) just stole the game for them."
On the penalty shot...
"I was staring him down the whole time. I have had some success in the past on going left side. I tried to fake low and go up high, just didn't get high enough. It was a big part of the game and I wish I could have had that one back.
"I was trying to read the goalie a little bit. You can't just go in there knowing what you are going to do; you have to look for the holes. But I pretty much knew by the blueline in where I was going. He was pulling back in the net a little bit. I can usually get them up high but it just didn't go in for me."
Satisfied being a captain the way the team kept things going...
"I think we kept going. With 47 shots against any team you need to get some goals, but I thought their goalie stole one tonight. But that is how every game is going to be here on out in this league. It's repetitive but you somehow have to find a way to break that. It's going to be a tougher game down there tomorrow night and everyone is going to be focused going down there."
Drew Miller, So, F
On the night...
"Definitely, it is frustrating; you run into a hot goaltender that makes 47 saves in a night that is a big key for their team. We couldn't beat them when we wanted to. They got the win, which is a lot of credit to them."
On the success of BGSU's goalie...
"He is a really good goaltender. He battles out there. I think he sees the puck very well. He gives his team a chance to win. When they get a couple of goals it just sparks him and he keeps improving through out the game."
On the play in the third period...
"I thought we played an excellent third period. Everyone was rolling. We got that first goal and it sparked the team. We had a lot of chances after that. Their goalie came up big and we got shut down. We have to come back tomorrow and have a solid game like we did in the third period and hopefully, we can get a couple by him."
