Men's Golf Finishes Second At Inverness Intercollegiate

TOLEDO, Ohio - Michigan State's men's golf team finished second at the 2004 Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio, on Saturday, Sept. 11. The Spartans, who held a four-stroke lead entering Saturday's final round, shot a final-round 304 for a three-round score of 885 (294-287-304).
Kentucky took top honors after finishing with an 877 (296-289-292). Kent State and Georgia Southern tied for third with an 886, while Notre Dame and Central Florida tied for fifth with an 894.
"We battled real hard today," said MSU head coach Mark Hankins. "It was a struggle at times today. Overall, we are happy with our second-place finish, but we also realize that we didn't play to our potential."
Senior Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) led the Spartans, finishing tied for fifth with a 218 (70-71-77). Kentucky's John Holmes took medalist honors with a 213 (74-65-74), while Kent State's Peter Laws placed second with a 214 (71-71-72).
Senior Jimmy Chestnut (Grand Blanc, Mich.) equaled his career-best showing with a 13th-place finish. Chestnut, who a 76 today, finished the tournament with a 221 (70-75-76).
Sophomore Matt Harmon (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and freshman Ryan Brehm (Mt. Pleasant, Mich.) tied for 21st with a 225. Harmon shot rounds of 79-71-75, while Brehm finished with rounds of 75-71-79.
Sophomore Mitch Pierce (Fenton, Mich.) rounds out the Spartan line-up in a tie for 38th. Pierce shot a three-round 230 (80-74-76).
MSU returns to action at the Central Regional Challenge, Sept. 17-19 in South Bend, Ind.
