EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State senior forward Jim Slater (Lapeer, Mich.) have earned 2005 All-CCHA Honorable Mention honors, as announced by the league (March 9). The league's 12 coaches vote for the all-conference teams and are not allowed to vote for their own players.
Slater paces MSU and ranks sixth in the CCHA overall scoring race with 41 points (15 goals, 26 assists) in 36 games this season. His 26 helpers pace MSU, while his 15 goals are third. He enters Friday's game against Miami with a career-best, six-game point streak, recording 4-7--11 totals during this span - an average of 1.83 points per game.
The 2004-05 season marks the fourth straight year that Slater has received league honors. He was a CCHA All-Rookie honoree in 2002 and earned All-CCHA First-Team honors in 2003 and 2004. After scoring 48 points (19 goals, 29 assists) one year ago and with his 41 points this season, Slater became the first Spartan since Mike York (1996-1999) to record back-to-back 40-point seasons. York posted 47 points in 1996-97; 61 points in 1997-98 and 54 points in 1998-99.
The Lapeer, Mich., native has appeared in 152 career games, recording 165 career points (63 goals, 102 assists). He holds down the No. 24 spot on MSU's all-time scoring list and needs just four more points to tie Steve Suk (1991-95, 169 points) for 23rd on State's scoring chart.
In addition to Slater, junior forward Colton Fretter (Harrow, Ont.), sophomore forward Drew Miller (East Lansing, Mich.), sophomore defenseman Ethan Graham (Xenia, Ohio), junior defenseman Corey Potter (Mason, Mich.) and sophomore goaltender Dominic Vicari (Clinton Township, Mich.) were among the players receiving votes in the All-CCHA balloting.
Michigan State (17-15-4 overall, 12-13-3 CCHA) opens up the first round of the CCHA Playoffs entertaining Miami (15-16-5 overall, 11-13-4 CCHA) at Munn Ice Arena March 11, 12 and 13 (if necessary). The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. both Friday and Saturday night. If a third game is necessary on Sunday, the game also will start at 7:05 p.m.
