East Lansing, Mich. - The Spartan hockey season got underway on Sunday afternoon, as the team contested its annual Green & White scrimmage. Split into two squads, the Green team won the two, 25-minute period game by a 5-4 score. Contesting a shootout at the conclusion of the contest, Jeff Lerg allowed just one goal from 14 White Team shooters to hold a decisive edge in the shootout.
"Its good to get the team into a competitive situation, but we're really looking forward to Tuesday's exhibition game against Windsor," explained head coach Rick Comley. "These are all small measuring sticks to see where we stack up, and playing against external competition is going to be good for us."
The White team held early leads of 2-0 and 3-1 in the first half of the scrimmage, with the "'09 Line" of Tim Kennedy, Justin Abdelkader, and Tim Crowder accounting for the first and third goals of the day. Daniel Vukovic scored the second on a blast from the near point while the White team was skating on the power play.
The Green team cut into the lead, with a shorthanded tally by Nick Sucharski to make the game 2-1 and Chris Mueller getting on the board to cut the lead to 3-2. Zak McClellan converted a penalty shot for the white team late in the first period to take a 4-2 lead into the locker room.
The second half was all for the Green team, as Corey Tropp, Daniel Sturges, and Dustin Gazely all found the back of the net to turn a two-goal deficit into a one-goal win.
In the shootout, McClellan was the only White team skater to score on Jeff Lerg. Kurt Kivisto, Jeff Dunne, Craig Dulman, and Corey Tropp scored for the Green team.
The Spartans face their first external competition on Tuesday, when they host the University of Windsor for a 7 p.m exhibition match.
