Men's Golf Looks to Defend Title at Boilermaker Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - In its last preparation for the upcoming Big Ten Championship, the Michigan State men's golf team headed to West Lafayette, Ind. for the 2008 Boilermaker Invitational, held on the par 72, 7,467 yard Kampen Course at the Brick Boilermaker Golf Complex. The tournament begins on Saturday, April 19 (36 holes) with a 9 a.m. ET shotgun start, and is concluded with a 9 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday (18 holes).
The Spartans won the Boilermaker Invitational last season and also won the event in 1969. Senior Ryan Brehm, who now has five career tournament wins, won his first collegiate title at last year's Boilermaker Invitational.
The 2008 Boilermaker Invitational field of 13 schools, includes three of the top-25 programs in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, inclduing No. 4 Charlotte, No. 23 Michigan State and No. 24 Indiana. Also competing this weekend is Eastern Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Kent State, Loyola (Ill.), Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Purdue and Xavier.
MSU is coming off a second place finish at the Robert Kepler Invitational last weekend at Ohio State. The Spartans finished three strokes off the pace, set by the University of Colorado, with a three-round total of 51-over par 903 (303-302-298). Brehm won the individual championship by four strokes with a five-over 218 (73-72-73), earning him Big Ten Men's Golfer of the Week honors.
With last weekend's finish, Michigan State has now placed in the top-five in six of the nine 2007-08 tournaments.
