EAST LANSING, Mich. - In its only pre-season exhibition game, Michigan State got goals from five different players in a 5-2 victory over Western Ontario University on Monday night at Munn Ice Arena. The Spartans had 39 shots on net, and each MSU netminder allowed just one goal in 30 minutes of work.
Michigan State got on the board at 11:55 of the opening frame with a shorthanded tally. Daultan Leveille got the puck in the defensive zone and passed it to a streaking Corey Tropp, who carried it over the blueline. Leveille went to net as Tropp carried it from the right wall into the slot, and his screened shot trickled five-hole past Western Ontario netminder Anthony Greico. Nick Sucharski nearly made it 2-0 seconds later with a one-on-one chance that Greico snagged for a save.
MSU eventually did get the two-goal advantage at 3:37 of the second period. Andrew Rowe had the puck behind the net and threw it out in front to Leveille on the left side. Leveille faked backhand and pulled it to his forehand to lift it over the leg pad of the netminder.
Western Ontario nearly got one six minutes in, when Adam Nemeth sent a puck through traffic that was deflected up, but Palmisano snagged the puck from midair.
The Mustangs finally got on the board at the midpoint of the middle frame. Kevin Mole had a shot from the hash marks that was saved by Palmisano and pushed to the right side; Yashar Farmanara was there to lift the rebound past the right shoulder of the netminder for the tally.
Both teams switched goalies after the Western Ontario score as Bobby Jarosz spelled Palmisano, who had 13 saves in his 30 minutes of work. Greico had 18 before making way for Keyvan Hunt in the Mustang crease
A pair of freshmen paired up to push the MSU lead to 3-1. Torey Krug sent a cross-slot pass to an open Derek Grant at the right post, and the winger had plenty of open net to send the puck to pad the MSU lead. The Mustangs had a golden opportunity to cut into the lead again with just over a minute remaining in the period, when Joe McCann broke in alone on Jarosz, but the netminder played him aggressively and poked the puck off his stick before he was able to get a shot off.
MSU made it 4-1 with a goal at 4:07 of the third. Brett Perlini had the assist when he fed Zach Golembiewski in front, and the freshman was able to redirect it past Hunt for the insurance tally.
Western Ontario got one back at 12:20 when Keaton Turkiewicz one-timed a nice pass from Kyle Lamb, a shot that beat Jarosz over the right shoulder. The Spartans responded with a marker at 16:09 from Trevor Nill, on an assist from Dean Chelios.
Jarosz finished his half-game with seven saves, while Hunt made 16 for Western Ontario in the second half. Michigan State will officially kick off the season on Friday evening when it hosts Clarkson University at 7 p.m. The game will be broadcast by Comcast.
