East Lansing, Mich. -- - Michigan State junior defenseman Brock Shelgren (Chicago, Ill. ) has been named the CCHA Defenseman of the Week, announced by the League office on Monday, Oct. 18. It is the first CCHA weekly honor in his career.
Shelgren, typically a steady, stay-at-home defenseman, got to show off his offensive abilities in a win and tie against Maine. He had a goal and an assist and was +5 in the weekend series; he set up Dustin Gazley's game-winning tally on Friday, and also scored the opening tally of the same contest. His Friday goal was his first since Feb. 20, 2009, towards the end of his freshman season. Shelgren also blocked four shots in the series.
The Spartans earned a 4-4 tie and 3-2 victory over No. 6/8 Black Bears at Munn Ice Arena in its first games of the season. The Spartans are preparing for their first CCHA series of 2010-11, and will host Alaska on Friday (7 p.m.) and Saturday (5 p.m.)
