East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State hockey fans got their first look at the 2010-11 team on Sunday afternoon, as the team played its annual Green & White intrasquad scrimmage. Green emerged with the victory, 3-1.
The game was played as two 25-minute periods, followed by a shootout. In the first half, the green team took a 2-0 lead. James Boyd potted a nice goal over the left shoulder of Will Yanakeff at 4:55, followed by the prettiest play of the afternoon at 6:13. Senior Dustin Gazley streaked up the right side to catch up with the puck, and backhanded it back to the bottom of the right circle. Derek Grant was there to one-time the pass for the tally.
The white team countered with a wraparound by Dean Chelios at 13:13. Chelios wheeled behind the net and tucked it between the left post and the leg pad of Palmisano.
Yanakeff played 16:04 of the first period, and made seven saves before making way for junior Kyle McMahon. McMahon made two saves in the first half and another XX in the second.
There was no scoring in the second half until the final minute, when the white team pulled its goalie in search of the equalizing tally. Dustin Gazley took a pass from Grant and potted the empty-netter.
After the two periods of action, each member of the team took a turn in the shootout. The Spartans will play an exhibition game on Friday evening against Western Ontario at 7 p.m. at Munn Ice Arena. MSU's first countable game will be played on Oct. 14 at home against the University of Maine.
