East Lansing, Mich. - Freshman defenseman Torey Krug (Livonia, Mich.) has been named the CCHA Rookie of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday, Feb. 1. It is the first-ever CCHA weekly award for the first-year player, though he did earn CCHA and HCA National Rookie of the Month honors in December.
Krug had a three-assist weekend and was a +1 in a split with Michigan. On Saturday, Krug assisted on MSU's second and third goals as the Spartans fought back from a 0-3 defecit in an eventual 5-4 loss. He also had an assist in MSU's 3-2 win over the Wolverines on Friday. On the season, Michigan State has turned in a 3-1 record against its archrival.
Krug is the CCHA's top-scoring freshman defenseman with three goals and 13 assists for 16 points, and he is tied for second nationally in scoring by rookie blueliners. Krug will be a candidate not only for the CCHA's All-Rookie team, but is also in contention for CCHA Rookie of the Year honors.
Krug and the Spartans (17-9-4, 12-6-4 CCHA) travel to Fairbanks, Alaska this weekend to take on the Alaska Nanooks in an important CCHA battle. The Spartans look to maintain second place in the CCHA standings heading into a bye week after the Alaska series.
