Wrestling Falls at No. 10 Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The 10th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions defeated the Michigan State wrestling team, 26-12, on Friday night in State College, Pa. Franklin Gomez, Ian Hinton and Tyler Dickenson all picked up wins for MSU, which is now 8-6-1 and 2-4 in the Big Ten. Penn State is now 13-5-1 and 5-2 in the conference.
"We had a lot of matches that could have gone either way," said MSU head coach Tom Minkel. "Up and down the lineup we had some really good duals. I told the kids afterwards not to get discouraged because we are right there with some of the best wrestlers in the country. We just have to keep improving each week and we'll be alright."
After 13th-ranked Brad Pataky put PSU up, 5-0, at 125 pounds, Gomez picked up his third fall of the year when he pinned Bryan Pearsall at 5:25 in the 133-pound bout to give MSU its only lead of the day at 6-5. Gomez, currently ranked fourth, led 4-1 after the first period and went on the offensive in the second period as after a reversal, he picked up two near-fall points and another takedown, increasing his lead to 10-2. Gomez started on top in the third and got the pin just 25 seconds into the period.
Spartan freshman Dan Osterman lost a tough battle to Adam Lynch at 141 pounds as he dropped a 7-6 bout that was decided on riding time. Osterman led 6-4 after the second period and started in the defensive position to start the third. Lynch got two points on a near fall in the third to tie the score, and then won the match with the riding time advantage.
At 149 pounds, MSU's No. 12 David Cheza lost just his second match in his last 11 as Penn State's fourth-ranked Frank Molinaro defeated him, 11-6.
Penn State made the score 17-6 just before the half when No. 7 Cyler Sanderson pinned MSU's Anthony Jones Jr. at 157 pounds.
Kyle Bounds gave Penn State's seventh-ranked Dan Vallimont a fight at 165 pounds, but ended up falling, 3-1. Vallimont led 2-0 after the first period and then got an escape in the second. Bounds managed to get an escape in the second but couldn't get the takedown for the tie.
The Spartans' Ian Hinton snapped a three-match drought when he defeated Justin Ortega, 4-2, at 174 pounds. Hinton had a takedown and Ortega had two escapes through the second period and in the third, Hinton picked up an escape and had the riding time advantage for the win.
At 184 pounds, Nick Palmieri dropped a 2-1 heartbreaker to No. 10 David Erwin, 2-1. Palmieri tied the score in the third with an escape but Erwin won with riding time.
The close bouts continued at 197, but this time the Spartans came out on top as Tyler Dickenson defeated David Crowell, 6-5. Down 3-1 to start the final period, Dickenson, got a reversal and a takedown to storm back for his 16th win of the year.
Penn State's 11th-ranked Cameron Wade defeated Alan O'Donnell, 6-1, in the final bout of the night.
The Spartans will remain on the road and face No. 3 Ohio State at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
