Michigan jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening frame. Just seconds after Corey Tropp just missed at the other end, Carl Hagelin poked the puck free at the near-side blueline and went in alone on Palmisano, and got his 17th tally of the season by beating the netminder low, stick-side at 7:06. Just over three minutes later, a blueline turnover led to another breakaway chance for the Wolverines, and Luke Glendening converted with a backhand shot at the right post. Caporusso made it a 3-0 game for the visitors at 13:35. He picked up the puck in the high slot, deked around a defender, and shot through traffic and beat a screened Palmisano over his right shoulder.
Michigan started the second period off with a bang, netting a power-play tally just 20 seconds after the puck dropped. Steve Kampfer got the Michigan tally, a blast from the left point through traffic.
The Spartans finally broke through with a goal at 14:31 of the middle frame. Jeff Petry received the cross-ice pass from Torey Krug and sent it in on net, it ricocheted off the shaft of the stick of Grant and went into the back of the net for the freshman's 12th of the year. Michigan got the goal back in the final minute, however, when Palmisano came out to the right circle to play the puck, but couldn't get back into position quickly enough to stop Louie Caporusso one-timing the pass from Brandon Burlon. Neither team scored in the third.
Palmisano (20 saves) was replaced by Bobby Jarosz for the third period, and he made seven saves without allowing a goal.
