Detroit, Mich. - Senior captain Nick Sucharski (Toronto, Ontario) is spending his Friday evening participating in the Frozen Four Skills Challenge at Ford Field in Detroit. Sucharski is one of more than 30 senior student-athletes selected to participate in this annual event, sponsored by Bauer. In addition to Sucharski, assistant coach Tom Newton was one of the West team's coaches.

Instituted in 2006, the Frozen Four skills challenge is part of the "Friday Night at the Frozen" festivities. The Hockey Humanitarian and Hobey Baker Memorial Awards ceremonies are first on the docket, with those awards given at center ice at the host venue. The Skills Challenge follows, delighting fans with competitions like fastest skater, hardest shot, and agility drills.
The NCAA selects senior student-athletes to participate - six each men and women's skaters and two each goaltenders are selected for both the East and West teams. The student-athletes come from both Division I and Division III institutions. MSU has had a player selected for each of the previous NCAA Skills Challenges, but only Colton Fretter (2006) and Daniel Vukovic (2008) have been able to participate. In 2007, Tyler Howells was MSU's selection, but had to withdraw when the Spartans qualified for the Frozen Four (and subsequently won the NCAA title). Jeff Lerg was selected in 2009, but had to withdraw due to injury.
