EAST LANSING, Mich. -- - Michigan State head hockey coach Tom Anastos has announced that junior Torey Krug (Livonia, Mich.) will serve as the team captain in 2011-12 season, while senior Trevor Nill (Novi, Mich.) and junior Anthony Hayes (Canton, Mich.) have been named the alternate captains. Hayes will wear a letter for the first time, while both Krug and Nill served the team in the same capacities last season.
"I have said several times this fall that I have been very pleased to see the leadership in our locker room," said Anastos. "I've seen that in addition to those three players who will wear letters, that leadership exists throughout our roster. Torey and Trevor by all accounts did an excellent job last year, and have shown me why they were chosen as captains a year ago. Anthony is highly respected by his teammates, leads by example and will compliment the leadership being provided by Torey and Trevor. He'll do an excellent job in helping lead our team."
Krug is only the second player in Michigan State history to wear a captain's "C" on his sweater as a sophomore. Detroit native Don McSween was a captain in the 1984-85 season, sharing the captaincy with Kelly Miller and Dan McFall. Krug becomes the only solo sophomore captain in program history.
Krug was named the CCHA's Best Offensive Defenseman last spring, and last week was named to the CCHA's Preseason All-Conference Team. In two seasons, Krug has never missed a game in his two-year career (76 games played) and ranks second among active players in points with a 14-35-49 scoring line.
"Over the past year, I have learned a lot about my teammates and about myself, as well as how to be a more effective leader," said the junior. "We have a great group of guys in the locker room, and our new coaching staff is enthusiastic. There are a lot of leaders in our locker room who don't wear letters on their jerseys, too. I'm honored to yet again be chosen to lead this group."
Nill is in his second year wearing the Alternate Captain's "A", and will be joined by junior Anthony Hayes. Both are Detroit-area natives: Nill hails from Novi, while Hayes is a native of Canton. Nill has played in 89 career games, with a 4-11-15 scoring line. Hayes, who was one of MSU's top defensive forwards last year, has logged 63 career games and owns three goals and 11 assists in his career.
"Im extremely humbled to once again be chosen as an alternate captain," said Nill "I'm excited to be a part of leading the Spartans into a new era under Coach Anastos Being a captain is a great honor, and I am honored to wear the A along with Anthony Hayes, as well as captain Torey Krug. All of us are very excited about the season ahead."
Hayes, the newest addition to MSU's captains, added," It's a real honor and a privilege to be given the opportunity to be a captain on this hockey team. Torey and Trevor have done a great job of leading this team in the past and I'm humbled at the chance to help them in this role this season. I feel very honored that the coaches felt comfortable and confident enough in my leadership abilities to join Torey and Trevor as the captains. The group of players we have on this team are already extremely close, and I'm looking forward to starting this season and the challenges that await us this season".
