EAST LANSING - Former Michigan State goaltender Ryan Miller has been named to the 2014 USA Olympic hockey team, it was announced by USA Hockey this week. It marks the second consecutive Olympic selection for Miller.
Miller led the Americans to a silver medal at the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver where he was named the Most Valuable Player by the media and the goaltender of the tournament by the Tournament Directorate.
Miller is in his ninth NHL season with the Buffalo Sabres and currently holds the NHL record for most career shootout victories. He is 10-18-1 this season with a .926 save percentage and a 2.70 goals against average.
The East Lansing native was drafted in the fifth round (138th overall) by Buffalo in 1999. Miller made his NHL debut in 2002-03, playing 15 games with the Sabres. In 2010, he won the Vezina Trophy as the league's top goaltender after finishing the season with a 2.22 goals against average and a .929 save percentage.
Miller is one of the most decorated Spartans of all time. The two-time All-American won the Hobey Baker Award as the nation's top player in 2001 and is still the NCAA-career record holder in shutouts (26) and save percentage (.941). In 116 games in goal for the Green and White, Miller posted a career GAA of 1.54 and a 73-19-12 record.
This past fall, Miller was inducted into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame.
Miller is one of 15 Spartans to have had the honor of participating in the Olympics. He joins Weldon Olson (USA - 1956, 1960) and Geir Hoff (Norway - 1988, 1992, 1994) as Spartans that have been named to at least two Olympic teams.
The 2014 Olympic men's hockey tournament in Sochi, Russia, begins Feb. 13.
