EAST LANSING - Munn Ice Arena will undergo significant enhancements over the coming year, it was announced today (Oct. 1) by Michigan State University Director of Athletics Mark Hollis. Several of the upgrades will take place over the course of the upcoming season, serving as the opening phase of a complete building renovation.
"As Munn Ice Arena approaches on its 40th anniversary, we're excited to announce the upcoming improvements that will significantly enhance both the fan and student-athlete experience immediately," Hollis said. "Our goal is for Munn Ice Arena to represent a tribute to Michigan State's rich hockey past and a commitment its future."
"These initial upgrades demonstrate yet another example of the commitment to Spartan hockey by our athletics department, alums and supporters," said head coach Tom Anastos. "The immediate enhancements are part of a broader plan for Munn Ice Arena that will ensure it continues to be one of the marquee college hockey venues in the country. It's an exciting time for everyone involved with Spartan hockey."
This initial phase of building enhancements, made possible through private support, will begin immediately and will be implemented over the next 12 months. The upgrades include:
Theatrical lighting
New high-definition video boards
LED ribbon boards
Chairback seating
New concourse décor
Dressing room décor
The building has undergone various improvements over the past two years. This past spring, the building's HVAC systems, ice surface, dasher boards and glass were all completely replaced at the cost of over $6 million. Prior to the start of the 2013-14 season, energy-efficient LED lighting was installed for approximately $575,000.
Munn Ice Arena has provided an undeniable advantage as Spartan teams have posted a collective all-time winning percentage of over .700 in the building.
The upcoming building improvements will only further enhance the legendary support that Spartan hockey fans have provided the program since Munn Arena first opened its doors in 1974. The famed sellout streak spanned a remarkable 323 regular-season games from 1985-2004 and this high level of support continues as reflected by MSU finishing in the Top 10 in the nation in attendance for the second consecutive season in 2013-14.
The storied Spartan hockey program has claimed three National Championships and has appeared in 27 NCAA Tournaments. Prior to the formation of the Big Ten hockey conference last season, MSU exited the CCHA as the league's most successful program, having won a record 586 games. The Spartans captured a conference-best 11 post-season tournament titles and won seven regular-season crowns.
