ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Michigan State men's tennis team finished play in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships Sunday.
"Overall, we did well as a team," said head coach Gene Orlando. "Obviously we have a lot to work on, but we competed well, had some quality results, and gained some confidence going into the rest of the fall season and into the spring."
Harry Jadun and John Patrick Mullane, the No. 6 seeded pair, lost a close doubles match to the No. 1 seed duo of Ralf Steinbach and Kevin Metka from Ohio State, 8-7 (6), in the quarterfinals.
Mullane also earned the No. 8 seed in singles, and fell to Illinois' Aron Hiltzik, the No. 13 seed, in the quarterfinals, 6-3, 6-3. Mullane had previously defeated Hiltzik in doubles play.
"(Mullane) made the quarterfinals in both singles and doubles, which was one of his goals," Orlando said. "It's a solid start for us."
Michael Dube and Mac Roy had a solid showing in doubles, with a big victory over the No. 4-seeded pair of Jared Hiltzik and Tim Kopinski of Illinois, 8-6. In the singles main draw, Jared Hiltzik was the No. 1 seed, and Kopinski was the No. 3 seed. Dube and Roy were narrowly defeated in the Round of 16 to Notre Dame's Eddy Covalschi and Josh Hagar, the No. 9 seed and eventual champions, 8-7 (5).
Gijs Linders also had a big win for the Spartans in the second round, defeating Kopinski, who was also ranked No. 44 nationally, in the singles main draw, 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. Linders fell to Mikael Torpegaard of Ohio State in the Round of 16, 6-2, 6-1. Torpegaard would go on to win the singles main draw.
