EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State goaltender Jake Hildebrand has been named the Big Ten's First Star of the Week and forward Matt Berry has been named the league's Third Star of the Week, it was announced by the conference office on Tuesday.
Hildebrand posted consecutive shutouts last weekend as Michigan State topped Wisconsin, 3-0, on Friday and Saturday at Munn Arena. He stopped 21 shots in Friday's win and then 38 the following night. Hildebrand is the first Spartan goaltender to record consecutive shutouts since Jeff Lerg in 2008.
The native of Butler, Pennsylvania, is tied for the national lead with six shutouts this season. He leads all Big Ten goaltenders with a .930 save percentage and 2.10 goals-against average.
It is Hildebrand's fifth weekly honor of the season, including his fourth First Star designation, and ninth career Big Ten weekly award.
Berry had a four-point weekend and recorded both game-winning goals. He scored a pair of power-play goals on Friday and then added an unassisted tally in game two and later picked up an assist.
The product of Canton leads MSU in points (26), assists (16) and is tied for the team lead in goals (11). Berry also leads MSU with 10 multi-point games this season.
The Big Ten weekly honor is the third of his career and second of the season.
Michigan State will close out the regular season this weekend in a home-and-home series with Michigan. On Friday, the Big Ten-leading Spartans host the Wolverines at 7 p.m. and will then travel to Ann Arbor for a 5 p.m. game on Saturday.
