EAST LANSING - Michigan State incoming freshman Mason Appleton was selected in the sixth round, 168th overall, by the Winnipeg Jets in 2015 NHL Draft on Saturday in Sunrise, Florida.
Appleton, a center, is one of five incoming freshmen that signed a National Letter of Intent in November to join the Spartans for the upcoming 2015-16 season.
Appleton produced 40 points, including 12 goals and 28 assists, in 54 regular-season games with the USHL’s Tri-City Storm. The 6-foot-2 forward was a key power-play contributor as half of his 28 assists came on the man advantage. In seven playoff games for the Storm, Appleton scored four goals and added four assists.
Prior to joining the Storm, Appleton excelled in Wisconsin high school hockey where in three seasons playing for Notre Dame Academy he produced 162 points (62g, 100a). As a senior in 2013-14, he posted 60 points (26g, 34a) in just 23 regular-season games for Notre Dame Academy in Green Bay. In five playoff games, he added 10 more points (4g, 6a).
Appleton is a three-time Wisconsin Hockey Coaches Association All-State honoree and was a finalist for state player of the year in 2013-14. He netted the game-winning goal in the 2012 WIAA state championship game.
Appleton is the eighth Spartan to be drafted by the Winnipeg Jets and former Atlanta Thrashers franchise. Jim Slater, who donned the Green and White from 2001-05, finished his 10th season with the Winnipeg organization this past year.
Appleton is the 114 Spartan to be chosen in the NHL Draft, all time.
