COLLEGE PARK, Md. â€" The Michigan State wrestling team won two of the first three matches against Maryland, but the Terrapins won six of the next seven to rally past the Spartans, 26-10, Sunday afternoon at the XFINITY Center.
Sophomore Mitch Rogaliner opened the action with a dominating 15-0 technical fall over Jhared Simmons at 125 pounds to give the Spartans a quick 5-0 lead. Rogaliner was in control the entire match and led 12-0 after the first period en route to his shutout victory.
No. 15 Geoffrey Alexander defeated Garth Yenter at 133 pounds, 7-2, as the Terrapins (4-6, 1-3 Big Ten) got on the board, but 141-pounder Javier Gasca extended MSU's lead to 8-3 with a 7-4 decision over Alfred Bannister.
Maryland won the next four matches in a row, however, to claim a lead it would not relinquish.
Red-shirt freshman Shane Shadaia halted the Terrapins' run with a 3-1 sudden victory at 174 pounds against Derrick Evanovich, trimming MSU's deficit to 14-11 with three matches to go. It marked Shadaia's first career dual victory.
But at 184 pounds, Jaron Smith edged Shwan Shadaia, 7-6, as the Terrapins re-established control of the dual. Shadaia led 6-4 after the first period, but Smith recorded an escape and a takedown to take a 7-6 lead after two periods. Neither wrestler scored in the third period as Smith hung on for the narrow decision.
True freshman Jacob Cooper, who held a 2-1 lead into the final period in his match against Garrett Wesneski at 197 pounds, gave up a late reversal in the third to drop a close 3-2 decision.
In the final bout of the day at heavyweight, Dimitrus Renfroe was tied at 4 with Youssif Hemida heading into the third, but was pinned late in the match to make the final score 26-10 in favor of Maryland.
The Spartans (0-8, 0-3 Big Ten) return to action for the inaugural Tumbles & Takedowns event on Friday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. MSU will host Purdue in wrestling and Iowa in gymnastics at the same time in Jenison Field House. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for youth/seniors.
