No. 8 Rutgers Defeats Spartan Wrestling

PISCATAWAY, N.J. -- Eighth-ranked Rutgers topped the Michigan State wrestling team, 34-0, Friday night at the Rutgers Athletic Center.
The Scarlet Knights featured five ranked wrestlers in their lineup and improved to 11-2 on the season (2-1 Big Ten) with the victory.
The Spartans battled early with several close matches, beginning with Mitch Rogaliner at 125 pounds. Rogaliner led 2-1 heading into the third after getting a reversal in the second, but gave up a reversal of his own in the last period to fall 3-2 to Sean McCabe.
In the showcase match of the dual at 141, fourth-ranked Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers edged Javier Gasca with a riding-time point, 4-3, to improve his record to 18-1. Gasca (11-4) gave up a takedown in the first and escaped to trail 2-1, but Ashnault rode out Gasca in the second to rack up 2:33 of riding time. After a quick Ashnault escape in the third, Gasca tied the match at 3 with a last-second takedown, but lost 4-3 on a riding-time point (2:30).
In the second-to-last match at 197 pounds, true freshman Jacob Cooper took senior Hayden Hrymack to the wire, but gave a third-period takedown to drop a 4-2 decision.
Michigan State (0-7, 0-2 Big Ten) returns to action to face Maryland on Sunday, Jan. 10 at 1 p.m. in the XFINITY Center. The dual will be streamed live on BTN2Go.
