INDIANAPOLIS -- The Big Ten Quarterback of the Year and Big Ten Receiver of the Year had their chance to impress NFL coaches, general managers and scouts in the second day of on-field testing at the NFL Scouting Combine on Saturday.
Connor Cook, the winningest quarterback in school history and MSU's all-time record holder in touchdown passes, passing yards and total offense, tested out as one of the top quarterbacks in the class before turning his attention to the field and making his throws during the drills held on the turf at Lucas Oil Stadium. Cook recorded the fourth-best vertical jump (33 inches), tied for the sixth-fastest 40 (4.79 seconds) and tied for the ninth-longest broad jump (113 inches). He also was 12th in the 3-cone drill with a time of 7.21 seconds.
On Friday, Aaron Burbridge started his testing by tying for the most reps on the bench press (20) among the wide receivers. In the running and jumping tests held Saturday, Burbridge was clocked at 4.56 seconds in the 40-yard dash, 7.22 seconds in the 3-cone drill, 4.31 seconds in the 20-yard shuttle and 11.90 seconds in the 60-yard shuttle. He recorded a 30.5 inch vertical leap and a broad jump of 115.0 inches (9'6"). Burbridge set an MSU single-season record with 85 catches while helping lead MSU to the Big Ten Championship in 2015.
In the media room, defensive tackle Joel Heath was the seventh and final Spartan to take questions from reporters.
"I just want to show scouts that I'm dominant and competitive -- that's the biggest thing in this competition," said Heath, a two-year starter who had a career-high 31 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss as a senior in 2015. "There are 50 defensive linemen here, so just being able to have a separation of ability, and a separation of numbers, I want to be a top competitor.
"It's refreshing to know that a lot of the stuff that the coaches are analyzing and talking about is very similar to what we ran as an offense and defense (at Michigan State). It makes it a smooth transition."
Heath, along with fellow Spartan teammates Shilique Calhoun and Lawrence Thomas, will conduct their on-field testing on Sunday. Coverage starts at 9 a.m. on the NFL Network and NFL.com.
