EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State men's golf finished in fourth place at the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio. The tournament was being held at the par-71 7,323 yard Inverness Club.
The Spartans have now captured two-straight top five finishes after earning a second-place result at the Gopher Invitational last week. Overall, Michigan State is 23-5 this year with two great finishes against elite fields.
Michigan State completed Tuesday's action 13-over 865 (290-287-288). Auburn overcame Duke's dominating first two rounds to win by three strokes. The Tigers finished with a 9-under 895 (280-281-282). Duke finished second with a 6-under 846 (277-281-288).
Auburn led all teams with 52 birdies in the three rounds, while Duke was second with 50 birdies. The Spartans completed the tournament with 40 birdies, which was tied with Virginia for fourth.
"The results were okay. We were a little to sloppy to deserve any better than that. The boys are competing hard. We just have to clean up some mistakes," MSU head coach Casey Lubahn said.
Junior Michael Sharp had his best finish as a collegian, finishing tied for fourth with a 2-under 211 (67-73-71). The first-round 67 was a career-low and the lowest round of the season for Michigan State. Sharp was tied for third with 12 birdies.
"The strength of this team is going to be that anyone of our starting five or six guys could do that from week to week. So it was nice for him to rebound after a mediocre week in Minnesota. He really put in some focused work on that short game. Michael has been through our program for a couple years, so he knows the expectations. I think he is starting to believe that he is that kind of player week in and week out," Lubahn said.
Senior Sam Weatherhead finished tied for 13th with a 1-over 214 (71-70-73). Weatherhead finished tied for 13th with 10 birdies.
Sophomore Dylan Deogun finished the second tournament of the season tied for 26th with a third-round score of 71. Deogun had a 5-over 218 (75-72-71), improving with each round. Senior Charlie Netzel was tied for 42nd with a 9-over 222 (77-72-73). Freshman Andrew Walker finished tied for 53rd with a 14-over 227 (78-73-76).
The Spartans remain in the Buckeye State, playing in the Bearcat Invitational, hosted by the University of Cincinnati Sept. 26-27.
